Welcome to the series on yoga and creativity. This article is the second in a series of four articles exploring, exploiting and investigating the nature of creative energy.

What is a chakra? How do they work? Is it possible to release more creative energy by working with the chakra system?

Chakras are energy centers in the body. Along the spine runs an energetic spine, the astral spine, which extends from the coccyx to the top of the head. There are seven main chakras that control different aspects of your physical, energetic and emotional body.

Chakras are seen as vortexes of energy. They are always moving, and even when they are inert, their movement never really stops. Like almost everything else in life, the chakras can be out of balance or not.

What is a sacral chakra?

The sacral chakra, called the second chakra or Svadhisthana in Sanskrit, is located below the navel in the lower abdomen. It is the centre of reproduction and creativity, but also of movement and emotion.

When they are in sync, you are more likely to feel connected to yourself and others. Your creative energy flows freely and abundantly and your sexual appetite is healthy.

The sacral chakra is the center of your passion. It is the place where your sexual identity and your creative personality are born. If it is not balanced, you may not feel connected to your body or your emotions, unable to express yourself creatively or sexually. You may also feel that you cannot fully express your feelings.

Don’t worry about it. Chakras are not made of stone. Using mindfulness and the following exercises, you can create a deeper connection with yourself and balance your sacral chakra.

Daily 15-minute sacral chakra alignment exercise

1. Focus

In a simple sitting position, bring your palms to your lower abdomen, just below your navel. Focus your attention on this space and feel the palms of your hands against your belly. Imagine a beautiful lotus flower with a white crescent moon in the middle. Let this visualization quiet your mind by drawing your entire consciousness into this space.

2. Respiration

Then you focus your breath on that area. With the inhale you expand it, and with the exhale you release the stagnated, compressed or too intense energy. Whether you are already balanced, a little listless or in a state of tension, this focused breathing will bring balancing energy to this space. Feel how working with the breath allows the rest of the body to relax, which is an integral part of harnessing creative energy.

3. Mantra

If you get in the mood, you can start singing Om Vam (pronounced Voom). Vam is the seed mantra repeated in this chakra. When you sing, pay attention to what feels right intuitively.

Does it feel good to sing slow and soft or is it better to sing loud and energetic? Anything that looks good to you is the perfect direction for your search. It may be difficult to sing out loud at first, but don’t give up. Listen to your body’s signals and send them from the inside out (another key element of authentic creative expression).

4. Movement

Let the mantra sink in and then transfer the energy by making circular movements with the spine, concentrating on tightening and loosening the muscles of the lower abdomen. These can be gentle, unstructured movements where you play with the depth and range of motion, bringing your awareness into the space of the sacral chakra.

Make your intention to stir and release energy in a gentle but direct way, to improve the flow of energy in that part of the body.

5. Meditation

Eventually, the movement may decrease. You can sit in meditation with any of the above tools to find connection and focus. Observe the flow of your breath or quietly recite the mantra in your mind. Visualize your astral spine energy moving freely and easily, healing and balancing the flow to your creative center.

Try doing this fifteen minute exercise every day for a week. If you want to extend your workout time, take an extra 15 minutes for creative expression. Maybe you like to dance, draw, write or paint. Anything you notice.
