Izabelle had always been active and interested in food and nutrition, but after becoming vegan for six months, she developed a variety of illnesses. She was a nutritional medicine student at the time, therefore she was looking for solutions in various diets.
Fortunately, she learned about the low-carb diet and began to alter her eating habits. Her narrative is as follows:

I’ve always considered myself to be healthy since I’ve always been active, ate enough of fruits and veggies, and avoided eating too much of “the bad things.” I’ve always loved cooking, so when I was 15-18 years old, I studied for three years at Stockholm’s Hotel and Restaurant School to become a chef. Later, I went to Australia to get a fitness certificate and work as a personal trainer (2013). In Australia, I fell in love and chose to pursue a nutritional medical degree since I understood that exercise alone would not be enough to help someone improve their life.
I was a vegan when I began my nutritional medicine degree in 2016. I’d been vegan for about six months and didn’t consume a lot of meat or dairy before that.
I became very sick in my first year of college; I had tonsillitis three times in less than three months.
I developed eczema on both arms, and later around my mouth, eyes, and armpits, during my first year of college. I was exhausted and felt 43 years old, not 23. I believed I ate healthily, with lots of veggies and less processed meals, and that veganism was the healthiest option for me. I’m not claiming the vegan diet got me ill, but it was the tipping point for me in terms of nutritional depletion.
My eczema continued to worsen as I gradually recovered from my illness. I tried eliminating everything from my diet, taking a ton of probiotics, avoiding all chemicals, and eating gluten-free bread, but nothing worked. I saw three separate physicians, who tested me for autoimmune, celiac, and other diseases. Eczema was the diagnosis, and it was “in your genes.” A doctor prescribed cortisone cream and oral pills, but I refused to use them because I wanted to figure out what was causing my condition. Once I knew what was causing it, I might possibly cure my problems.
As a result, I treated myself as if I were a patient.

I discovered I had increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and that this was the source of my eczema (skin inflammation) and poor immune system issues. I needed to refuel my body so it could repair itself! And to do so, I needed to decrease inflammation (low carb) while still getting enough amino acids, lipids, and minerals from REAL, QUALITY, WHOLE FOODS!
I improved after reintroducing animal products and adopting a low-carb diet. My eczema was totally gone after two to three months, and it took another two to three months to find out what was wrong. I didn’t have another cold sore until 2018 (due to excessive stress, and it was minor), and I haven’t gotten ill since my first year of college. I’ve completed half of my third year! I haven’t had any eczema since altering my diet, and I’ve been following a keto diet for the last month. NOW I’M EXPERIENCING EXTRA BENEFITS! NO menstrual discomfort (this had been a problem for almost a year and a half, with extreme agony – dysmenorrhea).
I believe the connection is due to the keto diet’s reduced inflammation, as well as the liver detoxification assistance provided by all of the high-quality amino acids and minerals… cruciferous veggies, as well as fiber I don’t have any significant mood swings, I’m more active, I don’t need to sleep after meals, I’m not bloated (a big deal for me since I’ve been bloated for the last five years), and I’m losing weight steadily. My thinking feels clearer, and I’m excited to see what happens in the next month! I’m not a large guy, weighing 61 kg (134 lbs) and standing 159 cm (5’2′′) tall with a lot of muscular mass, yet I’ve dropped 5.5 pounds (2 kg) in four weeks without dieting or exercising much.

Coming from a background as a personal trainer, I was dubious of such a low carbohydrate diet for training. “Will I be deficient in antioxidants and vitamins?” I wondered as a dietitian. To overcome this, I conducted my study, read articles, and examined the real chemistry in the body in terms of ketones, glucose, and other factors, and it was enough to convince me to join the movement. On a physiological level, the keto diet made sense. It also made sense when considering what people have been eating for the longest time (not high carb and grains). Then I remembered my past diets: neither the usual “normal diet” nor the vegan diet had worked for me. So far, the only thing that had helped had been avoiding wheat and gluten, as well as eating a lot of veggies and animal products.
Keto meant reducing carbohydrates even further and boosting fat, which I was more than willing to attempt given all the advantages I’d experienced with low-carb in the past. Because I’m limiting my carb consumption, it’s critical for me to eat high-quality veggies that are rich in fiber and include plenty of antioxidants and minerals. I definitely consume more greens today than I did when I was strictly low-carb.
I am grateful for all of my experiences since they have taught me so much. Perhaps if I had seen an article or anything related to eczema treatment and low-carb, I would have been even happier since it would have spared me time and mental turmoil. I am fortunate to be studying nutritional medicine and to have a real interest in this field, but it may be difficult to understand why low carb might be beneficial for this kind of problem for someone who does not have my enthusiasm or expertise… For dysmenorrhea, try a low-carb, high-fat diet with high-quality protein. I’d want to see even more research on keto and low carb; this area is only going to become bigger, and I’m excited to be a part of it!
