Chances are that you’ve heard of Yoga, maybe even tryied it, but the truth is most people don’t know how to practice it right. Yoga is not just about bending into impossible poses and touching your toes, it’s about becoming one with your breath, and focusing on your body.
Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years as both a physical and spiritual exercise. A regular yoga practice can help you develop strength, flexibility and balance, but it also has a lot to offer in the way of relaxation and stress relief. When you exhale, you melt into the mat and let go of everything you’re holding onto, let everything out, and feel yourself becoming lighter and freer, the instructor says. I lay on my mat in savasana and closed my eyes to slow my breathing after my very first yoga class. I was exhausted, but I followed his instructions and suddenly felt the hairs on my arms stand up. Goosebumps ran over my skin and I felt an indescribable feeling of total calmness, peace and bliss. I was 16 when I discovered yoga. That first lesson literally changed my reality. I felt a clarity and focus that I had never experienced before. Through years of practice, my body became more balanced and stronger, and my mindset began to change as well. I discovered my path as a yogi and have since found a deep purpose in helping others become yogis as well.

A yogi is simply someone who practices yoga consistently; he or she has dedicated a significant portion of their life to the yogic path. The feminine form of Yogini is sometimes called Yogini. This word comes from an ancient Indian sacred language, Sanskrit. Yoga means connection or union. Therefore, the definition of yoga is that yoga practitioners strive for the integration of mind, body and spirit. Becoming a yogi is relatively easy if you dedicate yourself to mindfulness and a regular yoga practice.
Beyond the physical
In general, a person who enters the path of yoga becomes a yogi for life by incorporating mindfulness, spirituality and asana practice into their daily lifestyle. In addition to the actual yoga postures, the dedicated yogi uses pranayama (breathwork), meditation, mudra (ritual hand gestures), karma yoga, and the ethical principles outlined in yoga philosophy. The Yoga Sutras describe four stages of yoga practice. These levels are called ashrams, or levels of spiritual life. These include:
- Young disciple (brahmacharya): A beginning yogi focuses on physical training and mental discipline under the guidance of, for example, a spiritual master. For example, a guru or a yoga teacher.
- Owner (grihasta): Most modern yogis relate to this level by living an ordinary life: You work, have positive relationships with friends and family, live in an apartment or house.
- Hermit (vanaprasthya): This is a transitional phase where highly dedicated yogis withdraw from public life and lead a very quiet, minimalist lifestyle with limited ties to family and community.
- Renunciation (samnyasa): The final stage of the yoga path generally requires intense practice, spiritual vows, and renunciation of bodily attachments, similar to a monk seeking enlightenment or spiritual awakening (bodhi).
At its core, becoming a yogi means embodying humility, compassion, kindness, patience and spiritual grounding in all aspects of one’s life.
How to become a yogi
1. Learning Basic Asanas
What we in the Western world know as yoga focuses mainly on the physical practice or asanas. The asana is a yoga posture that activates the synchronization of breath, body and mind. The sun salutation is the most common and accessible sequence of yoga postures for beginners. They are often used as a morning warm-up exercise to welcome the sunrise. These postures slowly arouse the body and prepare the muscles for deeper, more challenging asanas. According to science, sun salutations are focused on the solar plexus, where our inner self and core are located. They activate the digestive and nervous systems and improve mental well-being. Sun salutations should flow smoothly from one posture to the next, synchronizing the breath with the movement. A sun salutation flow for beginners may include the following:
- Mountain pose (Tadasana)
- Raised arms pose (urdhva hastasana)
- Bend forward (uttanasana)
- Flat back/semi-flexible position (Archa Uttanasana)
- Plank posture (Kumbhakasana)
- Lower thrust (Chaturanga dandasana)
- Cobra/High Dog (Bhujangasana)
- Head down dog (ado mukkha svanasana)
- Bend forward (uttanasana)
- Return to mountain pose and repeat
There are many books, posters, YouTube videos and yoga classes that teach basic asanas for all fitness levels. This is the first step to becoming a yogi or yogini.
2. Practice of Mindfulness
The mental aspects of yoga practice are often more difficult than the physical aspects. By practicing mindfulness in our daily lives, we become more in tune with our inner mind and less attached to fleeting feelings or emotions. Mindfulness is simply the practice of being present and observing thoughts, emotions and circumstances through the prism of mindfulness and unbiasedness. This is a form of meditation, but you don’t necessarily have to sit with your legs crossed and close your eyes. Mindfulness can be integrated into walking, breathing, exercise and visualization. All you have to do is slow down, be present and observe your thoughts without interpreting them. A simple mindfulness exercise to scan the body:
- Lie on your back and close your eyes
- Take a few deep breaths, concentrating on the feeling of air flowing in and out of your lungs.
- Begin at the top of your head and slowly mentally scan each part of your body, paying attention to the sensations of your forehead, nose, eyes, chin, etc., until you reach the tips of your toes.
- Move slowly, and if your mind gets distracted, bring it back to breathing.
- Notice the emotions and feelings you experience as you scan.
- Write down in a journal the thoughts or memories that come to mind during this process.
- Get up slowly and resume your daily activities, being aware of your body and mind.
3. Reading books on spirituality and yogic practices
To become a yogi, one must first learn. A true yogi never stops learning and studying. Since many of us don’t have access to great gurus or famous yoga teachers, we can learn about the practice of yoga through books. Reading a book is itself an act of mindfulness that allows for deep concentration and relaxation, especially after a difficult asana practice or a long day at work. 4. Making yoga a habit
As mentioned earlier, you need to integrate yoga into your daily life to progress on the path of yoga. Practicing yoga asanas 2-3 times a week is ideal for both physical and mental progress, but everyone’s journey is different. Many yogis find that a daily practice of 20 minutes of meditation, pranayama or asana is ideal for maintaining a yogic state of mind. Others prefer longer sessions of one to two hours, several times a week. But remember, the work doesn’t stop on the carpet. In fact, your yoga mat and postures are just the beginning. The yoga routine goes far beyond physical practice to include daily interactions with others in personal and professional life. To be a true yogi, you must adhere to the principle of ahimsa, or doing no harm. This means that all people and living beings should be treated with compassion and love. Whether it’s an argument with your spouse or the frustration of a stranger in traffic, yogic breathing exercises or mindfulness practices can be used as a routine to get you out of any negative or harmful mindset.
5. Invest in a yoga room or a studio membership
A personal yoga room or membership in a yoga studio is a symbol of your commitment to the path of yoga. It takes a financial and time investment, but the investment in positive energy and mindfulness are really the most important details. You can set up a yoga room in your home as your special sanctuary and dedicate it to your practice. Simple details like soothing colors, calming scents, plants and terrariums, wall hangings or other yoga items can make a big difference in creating a sacred and relaxing yoga space. On the other hand, joining a gym gives you a sense of community and allows you to relax from the stresses of everyday life. When you enter the studio and lie down on your mat, the outside world dissolves and you are not distracted by worries at home or the office. Studios are especially valuable for beginning yogis because quality teachers help you improve your posture, balance and form, and make you responsible for your practice.
6. Deepen your practice with teacher training
The yoga teacher training is what really took my yoga practice to the next level. It allows for deep immersion and focus on learning individual principles, attitudes and traditions. There are two types of teacher training: 200 hour and 300 hour courses with different certifications recognized by organizations such as the Yoga Alliance. If you decide to pursue teacher training, make sure you set aside enough time and space in your life to learn and practice. You can train in a variety of yoga schools, from Vinyasa to Ashtanga, Yin Yoga to Hatha, and more. Some yogis take the teacher training course simply to deepen their practice, without the intention of becoming a teacher. Others find that the path of yoga is their dharma (vocation in life) and devote themselves to the practice of yoga as a career and a long-term life path. Be that as it may, the value of a yoga teacher training goes far beyond the professional or monetary results it can bring. Teacher training allowed me to reconnect with my body and soul and brought me into a community of yogis that I am still close to decades later.
Ultimately, the path of yoga is a very personal and spiritual path, but it should never be walked alone. Anyone can become a yogi through diligent practice, but not everyone who practices yoga is a yogi. There is no official certificate that determines who is a yogi and who is not; rather, the yoga path is a philosophy and a way of life that encourages some people to deepen their spiritual self and become aware of the interconnectedness of the entire universe.
