In this post, I am going to share with you a simple method to lose weight and regain your health. Weight loss is not a diet. It is a process. Dieting is a common mistake people make when they lose weight. You can lose weight by making small changes such as eating fewer calories than you burn. But the truth is that you cannot maintain a healthy weight with a diet alone. You need to exercise a lot and loose weight. Most people know that they need to exercise to lose weight. At the conclusion of the 2009 Lean Eating Coaching Program, PN member YLR shocked the judges.

His astounding change, which included a 50-pound weight loss and a 13 percent reduction in body fat in just six months, earned him $10,000 as the winner of the Lean Eating men’s division.

But do you believe he came to a halt there? Has he blown up to 250 pounds after wasting his $10,000 on junk food?

Was he a celebrity? Are you a bit more observant? He was just an ordinary guy who was given a second opportunity.

Do you want to discover how to lose 70 pounds in 11 months? So, here’s his tale:

Starting point: 40 percent bodyfat, out of shape, and classified as “morbidly obese.”

Pain, both physical and emotional

Since college, I’ve struggled with my weight. I experienced standard high school body troubles in high school, but I was a member of the high school crew team, and the daily training plus my adolescent boy metabolism appeared to keep my weight under control.

However, in college, I stopped participating in sports and began to acquire weight. I gained, then lost a little, then gained again. Over and over again I’m sure most folks are familiar with the routine.

Now fast forward to the year 2008. I was despondent. I was at my heaviest: over 250 pounds.

Sure, I didn’t enjoy being so hefty. But you know what I detested the most? I couldn’t do anything physical without being in excruciating pain.

  • Walking a mile gave me a burning sensation on the outside of my calves.
  • For my calf pain, the expert prescribed medication and special shoes, but nothing worked.
  • I couldn’t go more than three city blocks without breaking out in a cold sweat.
  • I couldn’t walk six city blocks because of my physical limitations.

Worse, I was having a lot of trouble with night eating. In the evenings, while watching TV, I used to raid the refrigerator. It was a mindless meal. However, it resulted in much more weight gain.

Of course, my health was deteriorating as well.

  • GORD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) was identified in me (GERD).
  • In the middle of the night, I’d wake up choking on my own vomit.
  • To avoid choking, I’d have to prop myself up on a recliner and try to sleep with my head up.

I was, without a doubt, dying. If I wanted to stay, I needed to make some changes in my life. As a result, I began my search for answers.

Other programs were ineffective.

I believe I’ve tried every weight-loss program available, including Atkins, South Beach, and Zone. I’d lose a little weight, but get it all back.

I found and read John Berardi’s book Metabolism Advantage, and I began doing the suggested exercises at my gym. When a trainer saw me doing deadlifts, he approached me and inquired about my form. He expressed his admiration for Berardi’s work and volunteered to train me. For six months, I did personal training three times a week.

At first glance, this appears to be a significant achievement, but by the end of the six months, I had gained another five pounds of fat. I was now 40% bodyfat and classified as “morbidly obese.”

Making the decision to join

I was quite discouraged at this point. I’d begun out in poor health. And now I felt hopeless because I’d tried and failed so many times in the past, even with “professional” counsel.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting any real results. Despite this, I joined up, desperate and apprehensive yet hopeful.

Obtaining inspiration

I proposed to my fiancée a week before the Lean Eating program began. That was a watershed moment in my life. I knew I had to commit to the program when she said yes. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with my future bride, living a long, healthy, and happy existence.

Believing in the process

I was relieved before the lessons began. I was handing over my health to the Lean Eating coaches and program. It was now in their hands. They promised me results if I followed the program’s instructions to the letter. Of course, I was apprehensive, but there were no other options available to me.

I checked in every day, read all of the posts, and completed all of the exercises. I was operating on autopilot. I did exactly what they ordered me to do.

Surprisingly, my mindset altered before my body began to change. I’m sure it had something to do with the program’s pace and the lessons. So I felt lighter even before I shed a single pound. And optimistic.

Obtaining continued social assistance

The Lean Eating Support Forum was excellent. Every day, people would post, and I would check in. It kept what I was doing front and center in my mind.

That, in fact, was the most significant difference between private training and what we were doing with Lean Eating in my opinion.

Every day in Lean Eating, you are actively participating in the program. You’re either exercising, learning a new skill, or practicing good habits. Every day, though, there is something to do, no matter how minor. And this keeps you “fitness conscious” on a daily basis.

It was three times a week with my personal trainer. As a result, in between sessions, I just reverted to my previous routines. I was only “fitness conscious” for around 3 hours each week. After that, I’m back to my old self for the remaining 165 minutes. This isn’t good.

How my eating habits have changed

I used recipes and prep tools from the Pacific Northwest.

I began preparing meals using the System’s materials and Gourmet Nutrition cookbooks.

I’d prepare all of my meals on Sunday and take it easy the rest of the week. I didn’t have to think about what to eat or not eat on the fly because my buying on Saturday and prep work on Sunday had already taken care of it. Dr. John’s Chili was a childhood favorite of mine. Individual pieces would be frozen and I’d be prepared for the week.

The so-called “80 percent rule”

I found it difficult to eat four meals a day at first. I felt like I was overeating. After that, we learned about Hara hachi bu, or eating till you’re 80% satisfied. This was a fantastic habit for me to develop. It enabled me to “listen” to my body and adjust my meals accordingly.

That was roughly a third of the way through the show. Everything began to fall into place at that time.

How my workouts have evolved

Learning to “just do it”: For the first several months, I struggled with many of the exercises. I didn’t always complete the exercises. I did, however, push myself. The first few weeks were excruciatingly painful! I gradually got closer to finishing the reps and increasing the weight.

Learning to “find time”: Getting to the gym for each scheduled session was also difficult for me at first. You run out of time because life happens. You are unable to complete the workout. There were a handful of classes that addressed how to exercise when your schedule unexpectedly changes, and they were quite helpful.

Learning to push myself: Then there was a lesson about pushing yourself hard and giving your all. The lesson was timed to coincide with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s film Pumping Iron. That’s when my workout stepped up a notch. I put a lot of effort into my training and (I believe) became the slightly intimidating person at my gym.

Learning that regular physical activity is not a “option,” but rather a necessity: I scheduled the Lean Eating workouts for six months to ensure that I completed them. For me, they were a top priority. Around my exercises, I would plan business meetings at my gym’s cafe. When traveling, I like hotels that have an excellent gym.

How my perspective shifted

I feel as if I’ve been granted another chance.

My GERD went away about the second or third week on Lean Eating and hasn’t returned.

Social assistance

And, to my amazement, several of my behaviors have been inherited by my wife! She is and has always been a source of encouragement.


After finishing the LEP, my wife and I went on our honeymoon.

In fact, her encouragement was perhaps the single most important factor in my success.

Even if I hadn’t lost any weight, she would refer to me as “thin.” Even when I wasn’t aware of any changes, she was.

Every Saturday, she began measuring my changes with the tape measure. She mastered the use of body fat calipers. The pounds kept dropping. On Saturdays, we began going to the farmers market and cooking healthy meals together during the week. She assisted me with my Sunday preparations.

At the conclusion of the program, we decided on a date for our wedding. As the end of Lean Eating drew nearer and my wedding date became nearer, I grew more driven.

We had the wedding at the end of the Lean Eating Program. My friends and family were ecstatic to see me lose 50 pounds.

My wife and I chose a resort with a fantastic gym for our honeymoon. We walked a lot and played a lot of tennis.

Daily teachings provide insight

The daily lessons provided an ongoing opportunity for self-reflection. I was really moved by two texts that were part of the lessons:

  • Alan Zadoff’s book Hungry: Lessons Learned on the Journey from Fat to Thin helped me discover a lot of my childhood food issues.
  • Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma made me rethink everything I thought I understood about eating.

Round 2 of Lean Eating: Relearning the Fundamentals

Looking at my before and after photos at the end of Lean Eating left me speechless. The impact of the before and after photos was far greater than the number of pounds lost on the scale.

Despite the fact that the program had come to an end, I still felt I had some lessons to learn. I wasn’t prepared for it to be completed. I was startled to be selected as a finalist for the $10,000 award, and I had no expectation of winning. I opted to re-enroll in the program before learning the outcomes.

I’m glad I took the chance. Some lessons had to be repeated for me.

Despite the fact that I have never met coach Ryan in person, he has had a significant impact on my program performance. It’s evident that he cares about everyone’s success with the program on a personal level. It’s fantastic to have someone that is passionate about what they do as your coach.

My last views about my Lean Eating journey

My metamorphosis can be classified into two categories: physical and mental transformations.

I understand that the physical alteration appears to be the most amazing. However, images cannot convey the mental transformation that I have undergone, which is 100 times greater than the weight loss. My sense of self, my connections with my family, and my sense of self in the world have all improved substantially.

Lean eaters, here’s my advice:

To those who are just getting started, simply follow the program. Make it a habit to check in and complete the assignments. Don’t give it too much thought. Simply carry out the instructions.

Stay with the program if you’re a few months in and feeling discouraged. It took a long time for you to develop harmful behaviors (around 40 years for me) to get to where you are now. Six months is a short period of time to repair all of the harm.

There is no secret to success other than working hard and fully committed. “What is your secret?” people frequently inquire. They want me to say things like “take out carbs,” “no fat,” or “don’t eat after 8 p.m.,” but the actual secret is commitment – dedication to the healthy, strong person inside you who may be weighted down by negative thinking, fad diets, and excess weight. I was devoted to LEP from the moment I signed up for it. I had already achieved, despite the fact that I hadn’t shed a single pound.

Accept the program for what it is. Have faith in the coaching. This was, in the end, my key to success. Every lesson, the exercises, and why this exercise now or this lesson then might have been questioned. Sure, I had my doubts and questions, but sticking to the program wholeheartedly makes it work. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
