This Keto Margarita recipe is an adaptation from my pickled watermelon recipe, and makes the perfect drink for those who want to enjoy a little sweet, sour, and savory at the same time. The sweet and sour portion comes from the combination of fresh lime juice and simple syrup, while the savory comes from the addition of bacon.
You may have seen them floating around Pinterest and Instagram – a keto margarita that’s paleo, low carb or paleo-friendly – and it’s time we address them head on. If you’ve ever tried one of these cocktails, chances are they’ve left you feeling sick and anxious (trust me on that one). These drinks are made by adding sugar free syrups to the mix – a move that suppresses your body’s ability to burn fat and increase your body’s insulin sensitivity (which is a mechanism behind why carbs are so damaging). As soon as you add a sweetener, your body will be flooded with insulin and, once you drink too much, your
You don’t have to worry about a fat-laden mixed drink ruining your diet. Mix up the perfect cocktail and enjoy the best tasting, sugar free margarita without the guilt!
Margaritas are one of the most refreshing and straightforward mixed cocktails around, and this keto margarita is no exception. We’ve swapped out the high-carb ingredients for low-carb alternatives, removing all of the sugar but preserving all of the flavor.
What Makes a Margarita Skinny?
A slim margarita has fewer carbs, calories, and sugars than a regular margarita. This particular variety is not only “thin,” but also keto and low carb friendly. We took out the simple syrup and replaced it with triple sec as a low-carb substitute, resulting in authentic margarita flavors in a healthier approach.
Is it true that Margarita Ketos are sugar-free?
As I previously stated, this slim margarita is sugar-free. To stay in ketosis, we strive to avoid all sugar and processed carbs on a keto diet. White sugar has a glycemic index of 65, which means it will raise your blood sugar and temporarily halt fat burning (1).
Instead, we’ve gone with erythritol, a low-carb keto sweetener. Unlike a traditional margarita, which contains 16-24 grams of sugar per serving, erythritol is sugar-free. As a result, our keto margarita will contain only 1 gram of total sugar (coming from lime juice).
“Triple Sec” without the sugar
Triple sec is a high-sugar alcohol that gives margaritas a bright orange flavor. We knew the orange flavor couldn’t be overlooked, but in our low-carb margarita recipe, both simple syrup and triple sec would have to be eliminated. We substituted sparkling orange seltzer water for the triple sec. It contains no net carbohydrates but nevertheless has a pleasant orange flavor.

If you don’t want or can’t locate orange seltzer water, sparkling water with a few drops of orange extract or zest will suffice. Ensure that the orange extract you purchase is made up entirely of pure alcohol and orange oil. As a cost-cutting measure, companies would sometimes combine it with sugar or corn syrup. Orange extract can also be utilized in future drinks and snacks, so having some on hand is always a good idea. Without any of the sugar, you get the orange flavor.
What Is the Carbohydrate Content of a Skinny Margarita?
There are only 1 gram of net carbs in our low carb keto margarita recipe. Lime juice and erythritol provide the carbs, however erythritol is always removed from total carbs to give you net carbs. Lime juice has a small amount of sugar, but it’s not enough to cause concern because it’s only 1 gram per serving.
135 calories, 1 gram of fat, 1 gram of protein, and 1 gram of net carbohydrates per serving are the overall nutritional information based on these margarita ingredients.
Ingredients of high quality are crucial.
This isn’t your usual margarita recipe with a basic syrup. For the greatest flavor and smoothest sip, we use high-quality components in our margarita recipe.
Choosing the Right Tequila
You’ll be able to tell if the alcohol in your keto margarita isn’t smooth even if it’s served frozen. To ensure that your tequila has the delightful semi-sweet taste that comes from the agave plant, use a high-quality tequila. Without any added sugar or simple syrup, this will also help to level out the flavor profiles of our drink. It’s up to you whether you prefer an earthier or brighter flavor profile, but for a superb low carb marg, use the best tequila you can find.
Obtaining Orange Flavor
Your margarita, skinny or not, should deliver a punch! For this Mexican delicacy, that means well-balanced flavors that are both exciting and invigorating. Oranges aren’t keto, but orange “flavored” foods are. Make careful to use a high-quality orange extract or orange sparkling water so that your drink has a natural orange flavor. We enjoy La Croix sparkling orange water with McCormick orange essence, which has all of the flavor without the carbs.
Lime Juice, Fresh
Even though bottled lime juice is quite convenient, freshly squeezed lime juice is always the best option. When compared to bottled juices, it’s low carb, low sugar, and has a better flavor and quality. Fresh lime juice can be created by squeezing a few limes over a sieve or using a juicer to make fresh squeezed juice. The flavor will always be superior to the store-bought variety, regardless of how you prepare it.
Lime Juice with Sugar
1 oz. lime juice has only 1/2 gram of sugar in the nutrition facts. That implies there is only 0.25 gram of sugar per serving. Lime juice is ESSENTIAL in this recipe and should not be substituted or substituted with anything else (flavor or seltzer water wise).
Having it “on the rocks” or “frozen” is an option.
It’s always up to the individual how they want their drink served, but this recipe makes it simple to alter and change the delivery as needed. Stick to this standard keto margarita recipe if you want your margarita on the rocks. If you want it frozen, simply follow the recipe’s instructions and ingredients, but blend in a high-powered blender. This margarita recipe is delicious either way, so play around with it to discover your ideal cocktail.
What is a Margarita Keto?
With a total time of around 10 minutes, making a margarita keto is simple and quick. Only a few fundamental ingredients are required, and you may then create your cocktail.
Equipment
A cocktail shaker is essentially the only item you’ll need to prepare a nice margarita. A blender or cocktail shaker will be required depending on whether you prefer a frozen margarita or a margarita on the rocks.
Ingredients
To begin, you’ll need a good tequila and some ice cubes as a basis. To achieve the sweetness of a regular margarita, you’ll need a powdered sweetener like confectioners erythritol. If you don’t have a powdered sweetener on hand, you may always use a coffee grinder to grind the granular versions. Finally, you’ll need limes and sparkling orange seltzer water. The best lime juice is fresh, but if you don’t have any, a high-quality bottled version will suffice.
How to Make a Skinny Margarita
Cut a wedge of lime and rub it around the rim of a margarita glass to make your quick keto margaritas. Then, on a plate, add coarse salt and dip the rim of the glass into it.
Next, half-fill a cocktail shaker with ice. The ice will quickly cool your liquor, but if you want a blended marg, repeat the process in your blender. In a shaker, combine the tequila, lime juice, and Swerve (sweetener). Seal and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds, or until the outside is frosted.
We’re now ready to serve. Fill your glasses halfway with ice, then strain your margarita into them. Stir with a splash of sparkling water. For a little more zing, add a lime wedge to the top.
Opportunities for Extra Flavor
This basic keto margarita with no syrup is a terrific base for all of your favorite refreshing flavors. Use your imagination and add more than just a lime slice and tequila to this recipe. The following are a some of our favorite additions:
- Jalapeos- Muddle a few jalapeos in the drink and then shake them in. If you use pink salt instead of sea salt on the rim, you’ll get a whole new fiery tequila kick!
- Fresh Herbs- In this margarita recipe, experiment with different herbs. Because it’s a Mexican cocktail, you may complement it with fresh herbs like mint or rosemary.
- Cucumber- Adding cucumber to a margarita keto is another way to make it taste fresh. When blended into a recipe, it gives a light and delicate flavor without adding extra carbs.
- A strawberry lime margarita is a delicious sweet drink recipe to try. It’s much better when mixed with liquid sweetener to make a spiked frozen strawberry limeade!
Regardless of which recipe you choose, all of these ingredients will ensure that your keto-friendly margarita is tasty.
