In this post, I want to share my story and journey to a healthier me. When I first found out that I had a thyroid problem, I was not sure what to do. I was told to try the medication Synthroid. After taking it for a while, I saw no results. I was told to start taking a different medication, Cytomel. After a few months, I lost a lot of weight and felt good. Keto is life changing!

In the case of my dear friend Kari, that is certainly the case! She has been following the keto diet for just over 9 months and recently celebrated losing 100 pounds. She shares her story with us, and I have to tell you, it’s very inspiring. I’m so happy for her, and you can tell by her smile how good she feels now.

How did you discover keto?

One day my sister-in-law came to visit me. She had been on a keto diet for a few months and had lost a lot of weight. I was amazed at his progress and it inspired my husband and me. We were suddenly ready to become healthier and happier people.

How long have you been following the keto diet?

It’s been 9 months now since I switched to a keto lifestyle with my husband. We both felt too bad for our age and knew it was time to change. I turned 40 this year, and I didn’t want to feel 60 anymore. I’ve lost 30 pounds in 9 months, and my weight is lower than what I set out to be.

I arrived when I lost my father, mother and stepfather to cancer in a relatively short period of time. They were all in their early to mid 50s and the losses were staggering to me. I no longer cared about myself and could barely function from grief. I had terrible social anxiety and depression. Nine months ago, I was at my lowest point, and the last thing I wanted to think about was losing weight. But I also have a great fear that if I don’t become healthier and happier in my life, my children will suffer the same loss.

Do you count macros/calories/etc.?

I watched myself closely for the first three or four months, but now that I’ve gotten this far, I rarely watch myself.

I am pretty strict with my diet and eat clean foods that are keto appropriate, occasionally I eat dirty foods when I am out. I avoid packaged keto snacks, sugary drinks, fat bombs and keto desserts. I didn’t have a cheat meal. I’m staying the course and the dedication is paying off.

No, I never included FI in my program.

What is your daily diet?

I only drink coffee with whipped cream and added monk fruit sweetener for breakfast. Lunch and dinner almost always consist of protein, vegetables and extra healthy fats. I cook very simply because I don’t like to cook. I don’t nibble.

What helps you stay on track?

Perseverance and confidence that I will succeed. I began this journey confident that I would succeed and be a lifelong change agent.

What was the most fun about living in ketones?

As I lost weight and my energy levels rose, I also began to feel better emotionally.  My skin looks good, my mind is less plagued by fear and worry, I’m getting out of the house again and really enjoying life. The keto diet means so much more than just looking better.  It really changed my whole life and the way I see my future.  I will always be grateful to my own sister for her help and support in the beginning.

What advice would you give to people starting or struggling with a keto diet?

Start when you are 100% ready. The hardest part is the first two weeks, when cravings persist. It takes willpower to get through it. If you are fully committed and have the will to get through the first few weeks, everything will fall into place.

At first I was shocked by all this information. Before I started, I did some research, reading and found the guidelines I thought I wanted to follow, and only when I felt completely ready did I go for it.
