Lasagna Keto: How to Make It

It’s simple and straightforward to make the perfect lasagna. There’s no need to be concerned about getting the right ingredients or spending hours in the kitchen. This supper can be prepared in about an hour, giving you more time to spend with your family.

What Is the Best Way to Make Low Carb Lasagna Noodles?

What distinguishes this lasagna as keto? The noodle dishes. We created the perfect illusion of a rich, cheesy lasagna with zucchini! Noodles can be prepared in a variety of ways. We ended up slicing them thin and eating them uncooked because it gave them more bite. Other methods of noodle preparation include:

  • Heating on the Grill or Stove- As seen below, heating them on the grill or in a skillet is a terrific method to cook out excess water and add a little of char.
  • Slicing Thin Rounds- If you don’t have a mandolin, you may always slice your zucchini into thin rounds. This will take longer, but it will produce the same overall texture as thin sheets.

You can substitute yellow squash, eggplant, or even turkey slices for zucchini if you don’t have any or don’t like the texture.

Is Tomato Sauce on the Keto Diet?

There’s a lot of debate about whether or not marinara sauce can be taken on a keto diet. We just need 1/2 cup of marinara sauce per 4 servings in this recipe. If you use our favorite sauce, Rao’s, that’s around 2 tbsp each serve and about 1.25 carbohydrates. This alone proves that marinara sauce is suitable for a ketogenic diet!

Putting Low Carb Lasagne Together

This is a simple supper that will astound your non-keto friends and entire family with how delicious keto food can be. Knowing how to layer evenly is the key to having any good keto lasagna taste like the genuine thing. The proportions of ground beef, low carb noodles, tomato sauce, and parmesan cheese mixture should be equal. There’s no need to put off creating this lasagna with a total duration of under an hour and only 20 minutes hands-on time! To create the low-carb lasagna, follow these steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F ahead of time so you can quickly drop the skillet in after you’ve finished preparation.
  2. Cook the ground beef in a medium high heat pan with coconut oil. Combine your preferred sauces with the ground beef. Remove and set aside after about 2 minutes. – Check out our favorite low-carb tomato sauces above and choose the one that’s best for you!
  3. Slice the zucchini into as many thin slices as possible with a mandolin slicer and leave aside. – If you don’t have a mandolin, thinly slice rounds instead; however, you won’t get the same huge noodle effect.
  4. In a food processor, combine the ricotta, Parmesan, garlic cloves, salt, pepper, and egg until smooth. – This will be the delicious base that truly makes this keto lasagna pop.
  5. Spritz a light coating of oil on an oven-safe pan or casserole dish with cooking spray. Make a layer of ground beef to start.
  6. Place two layers of zucchini criss cross on top.- This method of layering allows for even cooking and full coverage of the meal.
  7. On top, spread a thick layer of the ricotta mixture.
  8. Add some shredded mozzarella on the top.
  9. Rep the layering process a second time (we made two full layers in our 6 inch skillet). Next time, make sure the last layer is mozzarella cheese.
  10. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake for 30 minutes, or until cheese is browned. – If the cheese hasn’t browned enough, place it under a low broiler for 2-3 minutes (NOT MORE THAN 5). The top will most likely be burned within 5 minutes. Place it on broil and sit back and watch the cheese brown.

A World of “Pasta-Bilities” with Custom Lasagna

Creating a niche Lasagna is both entertaining and delicious! There are a few tempting substitutions that may be made to improve the flavor of keto lasagna. Whether you’re looking for a traditional keto lasagna or a sophisticated feast, these ideas will help you succeed.

Getting Dirty

A vital component of any Italian dish is the pasta sauce. Here are some substitutions based on your desired flavor profile:

A sauce based on olive oil, such as Raos, is rich and flavorful. The differences between this sauce and others are night and day! It’s low carb and packed with of garlic, Italian flavor, and fresh peeled tomatoes.

Rustic and simple- To make a quick homemade sauce, sauté a little oil and garlic, then add fresh cherry tomatoes. Blister the tomatoes and let them break down a little before seasoning with salt and pepper. You’ll have a simple fresh sauce with tomato bits.

Lasagna Noodles Recipes

When cooking low-carb lasagna that tastes much like the original, the noodles must be handled with care. You can use a variety of noodle subs, but these are some of our favorites:

  • Yellow Squash resembles zucchini in appearance and behavior, except it is brilliant yellow.
  • Thinly Sliced Turkey- Thinly sliced turkey tastes just like ordinary noodles, believe it or not! Layer very thin slices of turkey between the shredded mozzarella cheese and meat sauce for a lasagna that looks like the real thing.

Some Cheese Options to “Grate”!

In Italian cooking, cheese is the name of the game. We advocate piling on the cheese in this low-carb and keto-friendly meal. Mozzarella, ricotta, and grated parmesan cheese are used in our original recipe. Other low-carb cheese possibilities that each keto cooking type includes:

  • Fancy Low Carb Lasagna- For a more refined palate, a blend of aged Manchego, mozzarella, and ricotta cheese is recommended for a good mix of creamy and salty.
  • Try a mixture of ricotta cheese and fresh bits of mozzarella cheese for a fresh and rustic look. This form of mozzarella comes in balls, but it’s also available as a huge log. For an extra gooey mouthful, simply tear apart chunks of this fresh cheese.

In Lasagna, what kind of meat should I use?

Any ground meat, as long as it isn’t pre-seasoned, should work nicely in this low-carb dish. It’s tempting to buy ground Italian sausage from your neighborhood butcher, but don’t! They frequently use corn syrup solids or maltodextrin as preservatives in their pre-seasoned meats. That applies to seasoned ground meats as well as their pre-seasoned sausages. So, which cuts of beef work best?

  • We like 80/20 ground beef because it has a lot of fat in it, which helps it stay juicy when cooking. Although the original recipe called for ground beef, feel free to experiment with the alternatives listed below.
  • Ground Pork- This will be the most authentic, as real ground pork sausage is usually 80/20. Plus, with the addition of Italian spice, each mouthful packs a tasty punch!
  • Ground Turkey/Chicken- We group poultry together since it is drier than meat when cooked conventionally. However, because it will be sandwiched between layers of sauce and mozzarella cheese, it should be fine for this lasagna!

FAQS

  • “Can I use cream cheese?” you might wonder. – Instead of trying to replace ricotta with cream cheese, use a little curdle cottage cheese. However, to make the cottage cheese less lumpy, we recommend mixing it a little first. Ricotta cheese is typically smooth, however it may contain little curds. For this dish, cream cheese is far too sour and smooth.
  • “How come my Lasagna Keto is so watery?” – Zucchini contains a lot of water. When food is overcooked, it releases all of the water that has been contained inside. To avoid this, carefully follow the recipe’s instructions to avoid overcooking. If it’s still too watery, try substituting thinly sliced turkey for the zucchini.
  • “Does Keto Lasagna Taste Like the Real Deal?” you might wonder. – We put forth a lot of effort to ensure that this recipe is as precise as possible. You won’t be able to tell the difference once the zucchini is covered in tomato sauce, ground meat, and parmesan cheese and packed in a cast iron or baking dish!
  • Is it possible to make low-carb lasagna ahead of time? – Of course! This recipe was prepared ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator. Cooked, it keeps for a week in the fridge. After it has cooled in the baking dish or cast iron, refrigerate it in an airtight container.
  • “Is Low Carb Lasagne Gluten Free?” you might wonder. This gluten-free comfort meal is warm and comforting. We were able to make this recipe grain and gluten free by substituting zucchini for standard wheat noodles.

Keto Lasagna Storage and Freezing

Look no farther if you enjoy making meals ahead of time. This keto lasagna keeps well in the fridge or freezer, making it a terrific addition to your meal prep this week. Plus, with a few extra steps, you can reheat it to make it taste as good as fresh!

  • Keeping Lasagna Fresh– Keeping lasagna fresh is a basic and straightforward process. Once the leftovers have cooled, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It keeps for up to a week in the refrigerator.
  • Freezing – Freezing low carb lasagna is similar to freezing regular lasagna. To ensure that it freezes and reheats as well as possible, take these simple steps:
  1. Once the lasagna is totally cooked, set it aside to cool.
  2. Wrap a piece of parchment paper around the portion and wrap it tightly. It will not freeze to the bag if you wrap it in parchment paper. Place the lasagna wrapped in parchment paper in a ziplock bag. Freeze on a baking sheet until completely firm.
  3. In the freezer, it lasts for a month.

Reheating Frozen Food

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Take the frozen lasagna out of the plastic bag. Remove it from the parchment paper and unwrap it. If the paper is stuck, microwave it for 20-30 seconds, just long enough to free it. Preheat the oven to 200°F and bake for 20 minutes, or until the middle is heated.

Keto Lasagna

In this keto lasagna dish, we went a little too heavy on the cheese, but is that ever a bad thing? To get the perfect creamy balance, we used three different cheeses: ricotta, Parmesan, and mozzarella. However, this isn’t the only time we’ve gone crazy with the cheese! There’s also a Keto Pizza recipe and a Keto Strawberry Cheesecake recipe on the site. So don’t worry if your favorite keto foods seem to have an excessive quantity of cheese in them; we’ve got you covered!
